So first off, I need to preface today’s rant by saying that the Children’s Museum that I work at is a very nice museum. It wins awards all the time. It actually just won an award last week: it was voted number one for the Best of Western Washington in the children’s entertainment category. As you can see by the picture, we have a very nice outdoor playground on the roof of the building. Blah blah.
My theory is that managers must go to some sort of convention once or twice a year where they sit around and think of stupid jobs for their employees to do. Today my stupid job was to go to the playground on the roof and sweep up the little bits of gravel that get everywhere because we have one corner of the playground that has gravel and the rest doesn’t. So you can imagine how pointless this was as I literally went around and around that playground sweeping up gravel only to come back to a spot where I had cleaned before to find it covered in gravel again. It was though it was taunting me. “Hello, I’m back and I’ve brought a friend. HAHAHA!”
Here’s the embarrassing part; one of the parents outside started asking me why I was even bothering with such a silly job. Yeah, my thoughts exactly. The other thing to consider is this: let’s look at a playground through the eyes of a child, shall we? Do you really think they’re going to mind if there are a few bits of gravel out of place on the playground? This job is such a waste of me.
