In 1931 Joan met costume designer Adrian Greenberg. He actually had the guts to tell Joan that her hips were a little big, but that he also had a way to fix this by ‘widening’ her shoulders (and this was way before Dynasty or Dallas made the look popular). He gave her the ‘coat-hanger’ look which would become more and more extreme as the years went on.
